All usersLevelPreschoolAge, grade"Level" (formerly called 'grade band") is not perfect but preferred over "age" or "grade" due to significant problems with these categories:
- inclusive design: large number of Kolibri users in non-traditional or remediation-based educational settings where age may vary drastically, and would be repeatedly told by labeling that they are "below" level
- inaccuracy: non-transferability (as reported by SMEs) of grade and age standards across country curricular standards
- misleading: need to use lower "grade" resources (ie books) by adult learners on Kolibri

Although users often request age and grade level, we believe this will address their need as accurately as we can while not ignoring these considerations and taking them into account for the global platform rather than only their particular use cases.

- avoid making assumptions about formats (e.g. documents are never interactive, videos are always engaging)
- encourage teachers to imagine more possibilities for content types
- help recommend types of content to students who need things that serve different instructional purposes
- avoid using content for inappropriate purposes if they didn't have time to vet it

All usersLearning activityWatchModality, format, purposeThese categories are intended to replace the former "learning modality" tag to help learners sort or at least be aware of what they can do with particular types of material. Given that all resources do not all neatly fit into a "subject" taxonomy, this can be a unifying way to begin narrowing the browsing experience with ALL content resources, without encouraging students only to click on what has a subject.

These categories will also help flag materials which may be interactive but not contain exercises.
